It’s been rumored for many months, but the iPad Pro finally sprang into reality yesterday at Apple’s ‘Hey Siri’ press event in San Francisco, CA. Apple took over the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium to introduce new products for this Fall, and holiday season.
There was no surprise that Apple showed two new iPhone models – iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. They also finally showed a new updated Apple TV with a much-improved remote and Siri integration. They showed off updates to the Apple Watch and Watch OS 2. I think the showstopper was the new iPad Pro.When you compare the new iPad Pro to the iPad Air it’s obvious that Pro means BIG. With a screen size of 12.9-inches, the iPad Pro is very big. For some, this new iPad Pro might actually be too big. It really depends on how you want to use the iPad Pro. For the casual gamer and web surfer, it might be too big. For those who want to use it for media production or to replace a laptop, it might be just right. This much screen real estate does allow the OS to handle side-by-side split screens and to have an on-screen full-sized keyboard, and still see what you are working on.
Along with an amazing screen is a new sound system. The iPad Pro has true stereo sound. It even adds a couple extra speakers allowing for true stereo audio in both the landscape and portrait orientation. The sound is also reported to be much louder. This will make the iPad Pro the ultimate video player for TV and movies on the go.
To go along with the new iPad Pro are some new accessories. First is the Apple Pencil. This ‘pencil’ is reported to detect its position but also tilt, force, angle and orientation. This allows software to allow for different types of strokes depending on tilt, force, angle and orientation. The new Apple Pencil does have a rechargeable battery inside. It can be charged using the iPad’s Lightning cable and AC adapter.
Along with the Pencil there is a new Smart Keyboard to go with the iPad Pro. This new keyboard resembles the type used with Microsoft’s Surface line, which means it’s thin, light, and acts as a smart cover for the iPad Pro. It connects magnetically to the new iPad Pro and uses a new three-dot smart connection. It will be interesting to see if anything else will be able to use this connection.
The 12.9-inch iPad Pro weighs in at only 1.57 pounds. By comparison, the iPad Air 2 comes in at just under a pound, 0.96 pounds to be exact.
The new iPad Pro won’t be available right away. Apple says sometime in November. It will be available in silver, space gray, gold, and rose gold with either 32GB or 128GB of storage. There will be a WiFi only and WiFi plus Cellular models. The WiFi only models are priced at $799 with 32GB of storage and $949 with 128GB of storage. The model with LTE cellular networking has 128GB of storage is priced at $1079.
